Allergies in Dogs
June 15, 2017

Has your dog seemed itchy lately, even if he is current on his parasite control products? If so, it’s possible that your pup is suffering from allergies. Just like people, dogs can be allergic to a wide variety of substances. Here, a Southern Lake County, FL vet discusses allergies in dogs.

Symptoms

The signs of allergies in dogs vary widely. Itchiness, as mentioned above, is a common one. Fido may chew or lick himself, or rub his head against things if he has allergies. Or, he may develop skin problems, such as red, flaky, crusty, or scaly skin and/or hot spots. Red, runny eyes are another symptom, as are recurring ear infections. Your four-legged friend may also snore, sneeze, or burp, and he could be, well, a bit gassy. Other symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea. Although fortunately these cases are rare, sometimes dogs do have more serious symptoms, such as fainting and seizures, and even death. Ask your vet for more information.

Common Allergens

Fido can be allergic to many of the same things as people can. Dust, mold, pollen, and dander are all common allergens. Your pup could also be reacting to ingredients in his food or doggy shampoo, a specific fabric or material, bug bites, or certain fumes, such as perfume or cigarette smoke.

Treatment

If you suspect that your canine pal has allergies, schedule a veterinary appointment right away. Your vet will need to run some tests to determine exactly what Fido is reacting to. Once the results are in, you’ll be able to move on to discussing treatment options, which may range from medication to special diets to specific home care regimens.

Home Care Tips

Your vet will be able to offer you specific advice on your furry friend’s care regimen. However, there are some things you can do to keep your pooch more comfortable. Vacuuming and dusting regularly will reduce the amount of dust and pollen in the air. You may want to check pollen counts, and keep your pooch indoors as much as possible when numbers are high. Wiping your canine buddy’s paws and belly down after each walk can also help. Finally, wash Fido’s bedding regularly, using unscented detergent and your hottest dryer cycle.
